Following Him: The Quest: Day 12.0

At present we are on the outside of the world, the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the splendours we see. But all the leaves of the New Testament are rustling with the rumour that it will not always be so. Some day, God willing, we shall get in. When human souls have become as perfect in voluntary obedience as the inanimate creation is in its lifeless obedience, then they will put on its glory, or rather that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch…

Meanwhile the cross comes before the crown and tomorrow is a Monday morning. A cleft has opened in the pitiless walls of the world, and we are invited to follow our great Captain inside. The following Him is, of course, the essential point.

C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses, 37-38 Touchstone 1996

The Wise, continued

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

James 4:6-10

Recap

Yesterday, I tried, and failed, to cover James 3:13-4:17. Now, I didn’t try to cover the whole thing, but only the positive side of the proverbial coin. I called it The Wise. Even though it was really only a tiny handful of verses, I was still unable to get through all the examples and supporting scripture. So, here we are again. If you would like to read that study, it is Day 11.0.

What does following Him look like?

Ever the practitioner of all things practical, James set us another list. Once more, let me try to flesh this list out with supporting scripture, and the writings of men more long-lived in the service of the Lord than I.

Answer the call

Submit yourselves therefore to God

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. – Philippians 2:5-8

41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” – Luke 22:41-42

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. – Romans 12:1-2

Resist the devil, and he will flee from you

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. – 1 Peter 5:6-11

12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. – Ephesians 6:10-13

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:6-9

Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion, and to you shall vows be performed. O you who hear prayer, to you shall all flesh come. When iniquities prevail against me, you atone for our transgressions. Blessed is the one you choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts! We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple! – Psalms 65:1-4

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. – Hebrews 10:19-22

Cleanse your hands, you sinners

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. – Psalms 51:7-12

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – 1 John 1:7-9

On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness. – Zechariah 13:1

Be wretched and mourn and weep

20 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” 22 In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. – Job 1:20-22

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. – Romans 12:14-16

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 18:1-4

11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave,[e] free; but Christ is all, and in all. 12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. – Colossians 3:11-15

Basic Training

We have a great captain and king who will lead us if we are following Him. Like soldiers we must undertake physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. First we must submit. It’s no use calling someone your captain or king, and then leading a closeted rebellion-of-one from the solitude of your bedroom or living room. That’s not really following Him, that’s stolen valor.

I am not sure if you have served in the military. If you have, thank you! I was in the Army. During basic training, I noticed something which seemed peculiar at first, but for which I later became immensely thankful. The first few weeks of basic, I thought they were trying to kill us with food.

Eat up, Private!

The drill sergeants made us keep both hands in motion at all times while at the table. If one hand was shoveling in food, the other hand better be on your glass of milk. The only other acceptable action was dual-wielding. Think Oblivion, only the mobs are eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, oatmeal, toast and peanut butter, fruit, etc. There’s not just a boss. Each boss has at least a dozen adds.

This meant you often saw young men and women, (or would have, if you had been able to look up) fork in one hand, spoon in the other, alternately lifting food from their cafeteria tray straight into their still-chewing gobs, one hand after the other. As the weeks went by, I became so grateful for the bountiful food. I ate like I have never eaten before or since. The physical and psychological demands of training required great quantities of calories. I think that is the secret to everything after submitting ourselves to the Lord and following him. We have to eat.

Food for following Him

Life is hard. It demands a lot of us. If we are starving for spiritual food, how will we resist the devil, humble ourselves, or draw near to God? We won’t. Instead, we are tired, malnourished, frustrated, and easy prey for selfishness and covetousness. We despise how we feel and seek to remedy the feelings with distractions that only bring temporary pleasure or relief. Our captain will call, and we will not have the strength to follow. And, if I might take an implication from Lewis’ quote at top, we will miss the essential point.
